Declutter & Donate
Decluttering isn’t just about creating space — it’s about giving your unused items a new purpose. We all have things we’ve bought with good intentions that ended up sitting in cupboards or drawers, and it can be hard to let them go because they represent money spent. But when those items find a new home through a local charity, that guilt turns into something good. You’re paying it forward, helping someone else, and creating a more positive impact with every box you donate. Use this guide to discover charities around New Zealand that accept clothing, homewares, furniture and more — and know that your “extras” are making a real difference.
Before donating, take a moment to check that your items are in good, usable condition. Most charities can only accept goods that are clean, safe, and in working order — the kind of things you’d happily gift to a friend. Clothing should be freshly washed and free from rips or stains, and furniture or homewares should be sturdy, unbroken, and complete with all parts. Electrical items must be in safe, working condition. If you’re unsure, contact your chosen charity directly — it helps ensure your donations truly help others and don’t create extra waste.
Be sure to contact the charities below before donating to check what items they can currently accept. Many also offer home collection services, making it even easier to pass your items on to a new home.
